Tools

Estimated reading: 6 minutes

The Tools page provides a centralized catalog for managing integrations that extend AI agent capabilities. Tools enable agents to interact with external systems, services, and APIs to perform specific actions as part of their tasks and workflows.

Control Plane supports two types of tools:

Platform Tools: Predefined integrations managed by the platform and available across projects.
Custom Tools: User-created integrations that are specific to the project in which they are created.

Tools can be assigned to agents through agent-tool mappings. Once assigned, they can be used by agents to perform the actions supported by the respective integrations.

Prerequisites

a. Access to the required project is necessary to view its Tools catalog.
b. The Admin or Owner role is required to create or remove Custom Tools.
c. Platform Tools are read-only and cannot be modified or removed by users.

Access the Tools Page

1. Open the required project in Control Plane.
2. Navigate to Tools.
3. The page displays the Platform Tools and Custom Tools sections.

Tools Catalog

The Tools page organizes integrations into two sections: Platform Tools and Custom Tools. Each section provides a tool count, search, category filtering, and pagination controls to help users locate and browse available integrations.

Platform Tools

Platform Tools are predefined integrations maintained by the platform. They are available across projects and organized into categories based on their functionality.

Each Platform Tool is displayed as a card containing the following information:

a. Tool Name: The name used to identify the integration.
b. Slug: The unique identifier associated with the tool, such as _1PASSWORD.
c. Description: A brief explanation of the tool’s purpose and functionality.
d. Category: The category or categories associated with the tool, such as Security & Identity Tools, Developer Tools, Business Intelligence, or Communication.
e. Built-in Tool Indicator: Identifies the tool as a platform-managed integration.

The Platform Tools section provides the following controls:

a. Tool Count: Displays the total number of available Platform Tools.
b. Search: Locates tools using their name, slug, description, or icon.
c. Category: Filters tools by the selected category.
d. Pagination: Controls the number of tools displayed per page and allows navigation between result pages.

Platform Tools can be assigned to agents but cannot be edited or removed by users.

Custom Tools

Custom Tools are integrations created by authorized users to meet project-specific requirements. They are available only within the project in which they are created and can be reused across multiple agents in that project.

Each Custom Tool is displayed as a card containing the following information:

a. Tool Name: The name used to identify the integration.
b. Slug: The unique identifier associated with the tool.
c. Description: A brief explanation of the tool’s purpose and functionality.

The Custom Tools section also provides a tool count, search, category filtering, and pagination controls.

Only users with the Admin or Owner role can create or remove Custom Tools.

Search, Category Filtering, and Pagination

Use the catalog controls to locate and browse available tools.

Search: Enter a keyword in the search field to find tools by name, slug, description, or icon.

Category Filtering: Select a category from the Category dropdown to display tools associated with that category.

Pagination: Use the page-size selector to specify how many tools to display per page. Use the pagination controls to navigate between pages of results.

Create a Custom Tool

Authorized users can create Custom Tools to add project-specific integrations to the catalog.

To create a Custom Tool:

1. Navigate to Tools in the required project.
2. Select Add Custom Tool.
3. Enter the tool details and configure the integration.
4. Configure the icon, if required.
5. Review the tool in the Live Preview panel.
6. Select Create Tool.

After successful creation, the tool appears in the Custom Tools section and becomes available for use within the current project, subject to applicable permissions and agent configuration.

Configure Custom Tool Details

Provide the following information when creating a Custom Tool.

Field Description
Name* Enter a name to identify the tool in the project. The name is displayed on the tool card to help users distinguish the integration from other tools.
Category* Specify the category that best describes the tool's functionality. Categories help organize and locate tools in the catalog.
Description* Enter a concise description of the tool's purpose and functionality. This description is displayed on the tool card.
Configuration JSON Provide the tool configuration in valid JSON format. It defines the settings and integration details required by the tool and must follow the expected configuration structure.

Configure the Tool Icon

The Icon Setup section allows you to associate an icon with the Custom Tool. Configure the icon using either of the following methods.

Option Description
Upload File Select Choose File and browse to the required icon file on your device. Supported formats include PNG, JPG, SVG, and WEBP.
File Address Enter the hosted image URL in the File Address or Image URL field. Ensure the URL points to the required image and is accessible to the application.

Live Preview

The Live Preview panel displays how the Custom Tool card will appear in the catalog. The preview updates automatically when the following fields change.

Field Description
Name Updates the tool name displayed on the card.
Description Updates the description displayed on the card.
Icon Updates the icon displayed on the card.
Note: Review the preview to verify the tool's appearance before selecting Create Tool.

Assign Tools to Agents

Tools must be assigned to agents through agent-tool mappings before the agents can use them.

To assign tools to an agent:

1. Open the required agent configuration.
2. Navigate to Agent Tools.
3. Select the tools the agent requires from the available catalog.
4. Save the agent configuration.

Both Platform Tools and Custom Tools can be assigned when they are available for selection and the user has the required permissions. Custom Tools can be assigned only to agents within the project where the tools were created.

The tools available to an agent depend on the configured mappings and the integrations supported by the agent.

Manage Custom Tools

Remove a Custom Tool

Authorized users can remove Custom Tools that are no longer required in the project.

To remove a Custom Tool:

1. Navigate to Tools.
2. Locate the required tool in the Custom Tools section
3. Select the Remove action.
4. Confirm the removal if prompted.

After removal, the Custom Tool is no longer available for future assignment within the project.

Note: Only users with the Admin or Owner role can remove Custom Tools. Platform Tools cannot be removed.

Permissions

The following permissions apply to the Tools functionality:

Owner: Can create and remove Custom Tools.
Admin: Can create and remove Custom Tools.
Member: Can access the Tools catalog and use available agent-tool mapping options according to the permissions configured for the project.
Platform Tools: Read-only for all users. Users cannot modify or remove them.
Custom Tools: Restricted to the project in which they are created. Creation and removal require the Admin or Owner role.

Notes

1. Platform Tools are managed by the platform and are available across projects.
2. Custom Tools are specific to the project in which they are created.
3. Assign a tool to an agent before expecting the agent to use it.
4. Tool availability depends on project access, assigned permissions, and agent configuration.
5. Ensure the Custom Tool configuration is valid before creating the tool.
