When you click the Launch Recorder button, the Recorder page opens. Click the Play button to start recording the automation steps.

Once the recording begins, a Rec dialog box appears, allowing you to:

a. Pause the recording
b. Stop the recording
c. Refresh the recording session
d. Launch Internet Explorer
e. Add validations for the captured screen

The Recorder provides options for Java, Desktop, and Web automation. Based on the application or page being recorded, the relevant option is automatically highlighted. Once the recording is completed, the page displays the list of recorded automation actions, allowing you to review, edit, and configure the recorded steps as needed.

Recording Actions

1. You can record actions using keyboard controls or mouse-over interactions by clicking the Control button.
2. When an action is recorded, the Element section automatically displays how the element was captured (for example, via keyboard).
3. The Recorder currently supports recording actions from Web, Desktop, and Java applications. The UI Recorder automatically identifies the application type and displays it accordingly (for example, via Desktop).
4. The Element section also displays the time taken to capture the element during the recording process.

Elemental Controls

1. Use the Toggle button to enable or disable an element if you do not want it to be included in the automation process.
2. The Description field is automatically populated based on the captured element details. You can modify this field if required.
3. Click the Element Details arrow to open the popup. Refer to the Element section below for more details.

Element Details

The Element Details panel displays the information captured for a recorded keyboard or mouse interaction and allows you to configure the input values used during test execution.

Identity

Field Description
Name Displays the name of the recorded UI element.
Role Indicates the control type of the recorded element.
Event ID Displays the unique identifier generated for the recorded action.
Details Provides a summary of the recorded interaction.

Variables

Variable Type Description
Text Input In Specifies the text or value to be entered into the target element during execution, when applicable.
Window Title In Identifies the application window in which the action is performed.
Completion Time Out Stores the date and time when the action completes successfully.
Offset (X) In Specifies the horizontal offset from the target element, if required.
Offset (Y) In Specifies the vertical offset from the target element, if required.
Note: The Element Details panel displays the configuration and execution parameters associated with the recorded keyboard or mouse action. Input fields can accept either static values or variables, enabling the recorded test case to be reused with different input data during execution.

Execution Settings

1. Bring to Front ensures that the target application window is moved to the foreground before the automation step is executed.
2. Skip On Error validates the step during execution. If an error occurs while identifying the element in the automation process, the step is automatically skipped, allowing the workflow to continue without interruption.
3. Wait Time defines the duration the automation waits before executing the next step. The value is specified in milliseconds, with a default wait time of 10000 ms. If the field is left blank, no delay is applied.
4. Execute By: Clicking this option opens a popup displaying the action and validation details. These settings determine how the UI Recorder identifies, locates, and interacts with a specific UI element during automation playback.

Actions

1. Clicking the Action button opens the Add/Update Action page. The following actions are available:

a. Navigation – Configures navigation to a specific page, window, or section within the application as part of the automation workflow.
b. Click – Configures a click action on a specified UI element by defining the click type (Single or Double), execution method (Element Click or Simulate User), and mouse button (Left or Right).
c. Type Text – Configures text entry into an input field using one of the supported input methods (Normal, Key as User, Paste, or Characters).
d. Delay – Configures a pause in the workflow for a specified duration before the next step is executed.
e. Select – Configures the selection method using either Index or Text.
f. Bring to Front – Configures the target application window to be brought to the foreground before interaction.
g. Expand/Collapse – Configures the expansion or collapse of UI elements such as menus, panels, or tree nodes.
h. Secure Type Text – Configures secure text input for sensitive information without exposing the value in logs or reports.
i. Shortcut Key – Configures the execution of keyboard shortcuts using modifier keys such as Ctrl, Shift, Alt, or Win combined with a standard key.

Depending on the selected action, additional configuration fields may appear based on the automation requirement.

Additional Options

1. Edit – Allows you to recapture the element to update the selector and validation details if the UI changes or the existing target no longer matches correctly.
2. Override Validation – Allows you to apply additional validation rules to the element during automation execution.
3. Delete – You can delete an element section if it is no longer required in the automation workflow.
4. + Add – Use the + Add icon to insert new elements using Step Up or Step Down actions within the workflow sequence.
5. Play – Click the Play button to execute the recorded automation workflow and verify the recorded steps.

Saving and Exporting

1. Click the Save icon at the top of the page to save the recorded automation actions.
2. You can export recorded actions in either XML or PDF format for documentation, review, or reuse purposes.
3. Reliability Score – Displays the reliability analysis of recorded element locators and highlights elements that may require optimization. For more information, refer to the Reliability Score documentation.
4. Validation Coverage – Displays the overall validation coverage across recorded automation steps and helps identify steps without validation. For more information, refer to the Validation Coverage documentation.
5. Testcase Run Diagnostics – Displays execution metrics, step status, pass rate, and diagnostic insights for recorded test case executions.
6. Legend – Displays the icons, indicators, statuses, and activity types used throughout the Recorder page to help users understand automation actions and execution results.
7. Launch Internet Explorer – It opens Internet Explorer and navigates to the specified web page, allowing you to begin recording UI interactions.
Click Launch Internet Explorer. After the web page loads (for example, the Google home page), begin recording the required UI interactions for your application.
